From Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area about 15 miles west of Las Vegas, Dr. Mitzi shares how light and dark are a part of us all. If you are in Las Vegas and have some extra time and want to do something other than the glitz of the casinos check out this area and also nearby Spring Mountain Ranch, both located close to Summerlin. As an added bonus in the hot months it’s usually 10-15 degrees cooler out here because of the higher elevation. Be sure, however to pack plenty of water and wear appropriate sun protective gear when it’s hot.
From beautiful Spring Mountain Ranch in Summerville, Nevada, Dr. Mitzi reminds us that we get to create our ideal life — white picket fence optional. Find travel tips on visiting Spring Mountain Ranch below the video.
Spring Mountain Ranch is located 15 miles west of Las Vegas within the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area .The many springs in the area provided water for Paiute Indians and later enticed settlers to the area. This 520 acre oasis was developed into a combination working ranch and luxurious retreat by a string of owners who have given the area a long and colorful history. Past owners of the ranch included Chester Lauck of the comedy team "Lum & Abner," German actress Vera Krupp, and millionaire Howard Hughes.
The ranch is usually 10-15 degrees cooler than the Las Vegas Valley as it is situated at 3,800 feet. The main ranch house is open daily from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. An entrance fee is charged to enter the park.
From the Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Garden inside the beautiful Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, Dr. Mitzi discusses the amount of team work and effort that goes into unveiling a new seasonal botancical theme. As the 2010 Chinese New Year, Year of the Tiger, botanical exhibit closes, horticultural experts work diligently to reveal the 2010 Spring theme.
Throughout the year the incredible indoor Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens are recreated to depict different themes. As one theme ends, another is put in place, stunningly arranged with beautiful plants, flowers, trees and unique features all enhanced with spectacular lighting. If you were not there when the change in theme occurs you might think it is completely seamless– yet it actually takes a team of 140 expert horticulturists to ensure that the Conservatory & Botanical Gardens maintain their splendor throughout the year.
Oh and speaking of feasts, there are several excellent restaurants throughout the hotel to satisfy even the most discriminating foodie. For vegan and vegetarian foodies, the Cafe Bellagio, overlooking the Conservatory and Gardens is an excellent choice, with a few vegan and vegetarian items on the menu. Try the Portobello Mushroom Sandwich. Be sure to take a friend or ask for leftovers to be wrapped up to take with you, as this is one enormous sandwich and comes with fries or coleslaw. The chef is happy to leave off the cheese and make it vegan, and also substitute a green salad for coleslaw. Delicious and good value for a luxury 5-star hotel. The other good thing about Cafe Bellagio is that while it is open 24 hours a day, it does not have that funky open-24-hours-a-day feel that some other places do — places where you just wish they would close and have a good cleaning.
The Bellagio is an outstanding hotel with excellent service. Staying there is a treat. Even if you are not a huge fan of Vegas, but happen to find yourself there for a business event or convention, the beautiful Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, not to mention the stunning outside fountains, can really make your stay special.
