Quotations from Senator Ted Kennedy

The day of Senator Ted Kennedy’s passing I put the following quote from the Senator up on my Facebook page and several people commented how much they like it:

“I hope for an America where no president, no public official, no individual will ever be deemed a greater or lesser American because of religious doubt — or religious belief.”
~A speech at Liberty University, October 1983~

A couple of other quotes of Ted Kennedy’s that embody the dare2create spirit are:

“We have learned that it is important to take issues seriously, but never to take ourselves too seriously.” ~Accepting an honorary degree from Harvard, December 2008~

“We know the future will outlast all of us, but I believe that all of us will live on in the future we make.” ~Accepting an honorary degree from Harvard, December 2008 ~

Ted Kennedy Memorial – My Thoughts

Like many people around the world I watched Ted Kennedy’s memorial services.

And, perhaps like you, I was touched by remarks that were made by Ted’s sons.  In the following section Ted Kennedy, Jr., his voice cracking with emotion, remembered how his father taught him a very valuable life lesson:

“When I was 12 years old, I was diagnosed with bone cancer. And a few months after I lost my leg, there was a heavy snowfall over my childhood home outside of Washington D.C. And my father went to the garage to get the old Flexible Flyer, and asked me if I wanted to go sledding down the steep driveway.

And I was trying to get used to my new artificial leg. And the hill was covered with ice and snow. And it wasn’t easy for me to walk. And the hill was very slick. And as I struggled to walk, I slipped and I fell on the ice. And I started to cry and I said, I can’t do this. I said, I’ll never be able to climb up that hill.

And he lifted me up in his strong, gentle arms and said something I will never forget, he said, I know you can do it. There is nothing that you can’t do. We’re going to climb that hill together, even if it takes us all day.  Sure enough, he held me around my waist and we slowly made it to the top. And you know, at age 12 losing your leg pretty much seems like the end of the world. But as I climbed on to his back and we flew down the hill that day, I knew he was right. I knew I was going to be OK.”

I was also struck by President Obama’s eulogy for Ted Kennedy. The entire speech was a wonderful tribute, describing many of the trials and tribulations the senator had overcome and how many other people might have given up. President Obama also described the care and individual attention that the Senator gave to each of the families in Massachusetts who had a family member who died as a result of 9/11.

And there was one part in the eulogy which moved me to tears as it is so reflective of  what dare2create is about.

“We cannot know for certain how long we have here. We cannot foresee the trials or misfortunes that will test us along the way. We cannot know what God’s plan is for us.  What we can do is to live out our lives as best we can with purpose, and with love, and with joy. We can use each day to show those who are closest to us how much we care about them, and treat others with the kindness and respect that we wish for ourselves. We can learn from our mistakes and grow from our failures. And we can strive at all costs to make a better world, so that someday, if we are blessed with the chance to look back on our time here, we can know that we spent it well; that we made a difference; that our fleeting presence had a lasting impact on the lives of others.”

Thank you President Obama for these words which in essence remind us to “dare2create a life we love and a world we desire to live in!”  And thank you Senator Kennedy for your many years of service to our country.
